A Musical Concert in aid of the Haiti Earthquake Disaster

A well-attended concert by Steventon Choral Society on Thursday 4th February in Steventon Village Hall raised over £1,800 for the UNICEF Haiti Earthquake Children's Appeal.

This magnificant sum was the result not only of ticket sales but also a raffle and numerous donations. Items for the refreshments served during the interval were donated by choir members and the choral society paid all other expenses involved in putting on the concert. With limited rehearsal time the choir put on a well received concert of varied light music including solos from members. Full concert report

Extract from the programme notes:

'Haiti's worst earthquake in two centuries hit south of the capital Port-au-Prince on Thuesday 12th January, wreacking the presidential palace, UN HQ and other buildings. The earthquake left an estimated 1.5 million people homeless and tens of thousands without access to food, water and medical supplies. The UN says the scale of the disaster is 'historic' with its staff confronting devasation and logisitical problems on a scale never seen before.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and is struggling to recover from years of violence, insecurity and massive natural disasters. More than half of the country's 9.6 million inhabitants are under 21 years of age. UNICEF is working to ensure that the rights of children affected in Haiti are not forgotten. A gift of £40 could provide four families with basic water kits.'
